As promised, here's the blog that will help you connect with other runners in the Odessa/Midland area who are looking for a training group. Here's how we want to set it up... if you are an experienced runner that can lead a training group, call me (Reggie) at 368-2500 and let me know your training schedule, running location, distances, and pace. I'll set you up with a blog post with your name so others can communicate with you and set up some running times. For those looking for a group, just keep your eye on the blog and check for groups that fit your schedule and pace.
Hopefully we can connect runners with other runners and make for a more encouraging training cycle. If you haven't registered for the race, yet, you can do so on the West Texas CrossRoads Marathon website. You save $15.00 by registering early for the half and full marathons.
Be safe... and keep running!

OK, I'll go first. I don't know if I would consider myself an "experienced runner" but I did complete my first marathon in OKC in April (with a rather disappointing time I might add). As I prepare for my 2nd marathon, I am beginning my 18-week training program (Hidgon Intermediate I) on June 1st. I am taking May really slow as I try to get my IT band healthy again.
ReplyDeleteThe program that I will start has me running M-W and F&Sa, with Saturday being the long runs and includes two 20-milers. As with my 1st marathon, my time goal is around 3:40; however, I shuffled across the finish line at 4:39. Therefore, my utmost time goal for marathon #2 is the 4:00 barrier with anything less than that being the cherry on top.
So if anyone is interested in pacing at around an 8:45 mile, with the long runs at a pace of ~9:30, I'd more than welcome the company. My mid-week runs will probably be around UTPB and east Odessa, since I'm on the faculty at UTPB. My long runs have varied quite a bit. Since I live in Midland, I've done my long runs around Midland, around the loop in Odessa, and I've run along 191 to and from UTPB-Grande Stadium.
Looking forward to a rewarding (sense of accomplishment and time) 2nd marathon.
Run On (and stay healthy)!
Kyle
DrJayhawk, I am with you on the training. I ran my first marathon in Feb. (Cowtown) in Ft. worth, my goal was 4:00 hours but with a bum knee I finished in 4:37. I am also starting trainnig on June 1 (same program as you)would love the support. I would like to break the 4 hour mark this time.

Hi Mark! I am having trouble with my Google username/password so I am trying this again.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kyle and am looking forward to training with someone of equal ability/similar goals. I was training (and will continue to do so when our schedules jive) with a friend in Midland who ran a 3:17 at Boston this year. He is definitely out of my league (or maybe I am definitely out of his league).
If you want to contact me so that we can meet and/or make preliminary plans, you can reach me at beran_k@utpb.edu.
Talk with you soon.
Kyle
Hey Guys,
ReplyDeleteMy name is James Seaton. I ran the half last year although I trained for the full marathon. This year, I'm hoping that if I can train with someone, I might be able to do the full 26.2. Mark, Kyle - if you would like another running partner, I'm game. I generally run around Rocky Lane-Hext-Eastridge area in East Odessa, but I'll run anywhere.
Let me know; I can be reached most often at james@killmanpc.com.
Keep running! Hope to hear from you, soon.
James
James,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the training thread. I'd be more than happy to share the road with you. What is your training schedule? What days are you running? When have you scheduled your long runs?
I am currently in Day 2:Week 1 of Higdon's Intermediate I training program. My schedule is M-W, F&S, with Saturday being my long run. FYI, Mark lives in Canyon, TX but we have been emailing each other encouragement.
I will drop you a quick email to say Hi and then we can start planning some runs together.
Run On! Kyle
I am interested in the 5K portion of the marathon and would like some more direction. I am currently getting back in shape after surgery last year (I had spinal fusion (T1-L1) and it is all chronicled in my blog) and would love to run a 5K for the first time!
ReplyDeleteHello everyone, my name is Sara Kate. Rock on for you all with your marathon running, I'm super encouraged!
ReplyDeleteOne Crooked Momma- my best friend and I are training for the 5K portion of the race. As of this morning, we finished the second day of Week 5 in the "Couch to 5K" program. The amount of knowledge I have of running wouldn't fill up a thimble, but the "couch" program seems to be working quite well for us.
FYI- we are out on the UTPB track Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week at 6:00 am and you are welcome to join us. (We started with four girls and are down to two, so we definitely have room for you if you're interested). Be forewarned, our pace is slow right now. We thought it would be better to work on our running endurance through time, versus distance, at this point. (You experienced runners, if you have any suggestions or think we should be marking distance, please say so)!
Can't wait for October 3!
Sara Kate
I'm trying to get started on the couch to 5K...I live in Midland and with kiddos won't be able to make it out at 6am to Odessa...Thank you so much for the invite! If I ever can I will look you guys up.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try and start walking at the LHS track here in the week to come.
Best of Luck to you!!!!
Ladies...Congrats on moving from 0 to 5K! I'm not a serious runner by any stretch of the imagination, but got back to it (from the old HS days) due to blood pressure issues. All I will say is stay committed to your goal...It's a long process but the personal rewards are well worth it.
ReplyDeleteRun On!
Kyle
I am training for my first half-marathon and was wanting to know if there are any running groups in the Midland-Odessa area? My pace is around 8:30 to 9:00 and I usually do my long runs on Sat morning...I could try and keep up if the group runs at a faster pace!! If anyone would let me know, I'd appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much,
Kelli
Hey Kyle,
ReplyDeleteI see they have the route posted now. Looks to be very flat. I was kinda wishing they would have a large hill (about 11 % grade) thrown in somewhere. LOL. Keep training, I will send you info on the half here in Amarillo on your facebook.
Mark
Does anyone know where to find the race results from last year race?

ReplyDeleteI'm interested in the 5K too. My only running experience are 10 minute jogs before weight training for a year. Now I'm serious as to doing a true run.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing the "Couch to 5K" training plan as well. I go to UTPB track to train, but in the evening around 8:00-9:00pm if anyone would like to run.
Last year's race results are available at
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mychiptime.com Just do a search on West Texas CrossRoads Marathon (location - Odessa). Can also get there from www.run-far.com website.
There are training runs at UTPB on Saturday mornings. There are a few groups that meet near the firestation on University at 7:00. There are 3 water stations located around the outer loop.
ReplyDeleteBeginning tomorrow morning, we will have just one water station on the UTPB route for Saturday mornings. It will be located at the south entrance trail crossing (Oakwood entrance). See you there!
